“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31

An important part of “Let’s Move 5th District” is making our church activities and church life more healthful and supportive of church members who are trying to live healthier lifestyles.

We call upon all AME churches in the fifth district to embrace several simple ideas that will promote healthier living among all church members. There are four main goals that we are seeking to accomplish:

  • Inform church members about how to improve their health through simple lifestyle changes.
  • Give church members the opportunity to try new foods and types of fruits and vegetables as well as participate in fun physical activity programs sponsored by the church.
  • Teach church members skills to change their eating habits.
  • Inspire church members to make healthier choices.

Spread the Good News!

Share your ideas for how to incorporate
“Let’s Move 5th District” into your church life:

  • Have a monthly spirit walk after first Sunday services
  • Introduce a “praise” stretch during services
  • Hold a produce market after services where church members can sell produce from their gardens

  • Sponsor an “Iron Chef” style cook-off for members of the Men’s Ministry

We ask all churches to “get moving” and adopt one or more of the following elements into their church ministry:

  • Make it a church policy to provide healthy food options at all catered church functions.

  • Sponsor activities that teach and encourage healthier eating habits, such as nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, taste tests, or a monthly produce market on church grounds. Providing a variety of options will appeal to the widest range of members.

  • Combine the nutrition and fitness message with other education programs such as on various diseases (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer) or on gardening, exercise, financial planning (includes meal planning and food budgets), etc.

  • Incorporate a health message into all areas of church life, such as Sunday School, Bible Study, Missionary Society meetings, Bible camp, choir rehearsals, etc.

  • Promote, encourage and inspire members with a message of improving health in body as well as spirit in all church media and from the pulpit.

Most importantly, celebrate your successes! Recognize members who are achieve their health goals, actively work and support the “Let’s Move 5th District” campaign, and provide leadership for church activities that promote better health for all members.
